Still Early Days for US Spring Wheat Harvest 




The US spring wheat harvest is still finding its footing, with progress behind average in all major production states except South Dakota. 


Meanwhile, the winter wheat harvest is nearing the finish line. 


According to Monday’s USDA crop progress report, 16% of the national spring wheat crop was in the bin as of Sunday, up just 7 points on the week and far behind 55% last year and 35% on average. On the other hand, 90% of the winter wheat crop was off, compared to 86% a week earlier, 97% last year and 94% on average. 


The Minnesota spring wheat harvest advanced 10 points on the week to 12% complete as of Sunday, versus 90% last year and 42% on average, while the Montana harvest gained just 4 points to 26% done, well behind 51% last year and 34% on average. In the primary production state of North Dakota, where the harvest is just now getting started, 5% of the crop was off, compared to 45% last year and 29% on average. In contrast, the South Dakota spring wheat crop was 72% harvested as of Sunday, up from 54% a week earlier and ahead of both last year and the average at 79% and 68%, respectively. 


After a hefty 6-point drop the previous week, the condition of the US spring wheat crop held steady at 64% good to excellent – still up sharply from only 11% last year. 


The Minnesota spring wheat crop improved 8 points on the week to 80% good to excellent, while Montana was up 1 point to 38%. The condition of the North Dakota crop was down 2 points to 72%, and South Dakota was unchanged at 47%. 


For winter wheat, harvest operations have now wrapped up or are near completion in most states. In Michigan, the harvest gained 3 points from a week earlier to reach 96% complete as of Sunday, a single point behind the state average.
